Frown- March 2022

I made this piece for my graphic design class in the Media Arts Fundamentals program. The aim of this assignment was to take a concept given to you and create four different images that fit under that theme in four black and white squares. Each square had a specific style; Representational ( top left ), symbolic ( top right ), typography ( bottom right), and abstract ( bottom left ) .
I chose the theme “ Frown” because it interested me and I felt that it would be a good challenge for me to come up with ideas that fit each design.
It was one of my first times using illustrator, so this project allowed me to expand my skills in the program and it also allowed me to practice drawing using design elements.

For representational, I decided to simply draw a frowny face. I spread out their facial features to create a long face ( like when you ask someone who is sad, “why the long face?”) and I used a specific tool that would create sharp and curved lines to add more drama to the face. The symbolic image was very easy for me. I am a former drama student, so I thought of the smile/frown mask that is often seen. So I drew a very droopy version of the frowning mask. For typography, I wanted a large, bold, circus-looking font to represent a frown. I also created a bend in the text in the shape of a frown. Finally, the abstract was the hardest one for me to achieve. I struggled to come up with an abstract concept for a frown. I tried using abstract techniques to create a frown but finally came up with the concept seen above. I used lines to create a wave, and I placed dots in specific places to create frowns that were both upside down and right side up.
